*Disclaimer: The calculators and the chart can not be used in place of or as medical advice. Possible comorbidities and many variables (example: pregnant, age, amount of muscle mass, high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory failure, heart failure, etc...) maybe present which could increase or decrease your actual BMI and your chances for surgery. If you feel you have a weight problem or are a candidate for bariatric weight loss surgery, consult with your physician or Contact Us for more information.

Not everyone is a candidate for weight loss surgery. The decision to have weight loss surgery is an important one. The candidate for surgery must understand and assess the benefits and risks of the surgery before making an informed decision.

To be considered for weight loss surgery by the Bariatric Surgery Team at White Plains Hospital, a patient must have met the following guidelines.

  • Previous efforts at weight loss through supervised weight loss diets have failed. This does not include fad diets.
  • The candidate must be motivated to lose weight and must understand the dietary restrictions that will be caused by the surgery.
  • There is no current drug or alcohol abuse. Individuals with a past history must be in recovery.
  • Major psychiatric illness must be effectively managed by medication and/or psychotherapeutic treatment.
  • The patient does not have a medical contraindication to the surgery, and the surgery is recommended by the patient's own physician.
  • The patient must be at least 100 pounds overweight, 60% above ideal body weight or have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of >40
