Not everyone is a candidate for Bariatric (weight loss surgery). The decision to have Bariatric Surgery (fat surgery stomach surgery or stomach stapling) is an important one. The candidate for fat surgery must understand and assess the benefits and risks of the weight loss surgery before making an informed decision.

To be considered for weight loss surgery by the New York Bariatrics Surgery Team at White Plains Hospital, a patient must have met the following guidelines.

  • Previous efforts at weight loss through supervised weight loss diets have failed. This does not include fad diets.
  • The candidate must be motivated to lose weight and must understand the dietary restrictions that will be caused by the surgery.
  • There is no current drug or alcohol abuse. Individuals with a past history must be in recovery.
  • Major psychiatric illness must be effectively managed by medication and/or psychotherapeutic treatment.
  • The patient does not have a medical contraindication to the weight loss surgery, and the bariatric surgery is recommended by the patient's own physician.
  • The patient must be at least 45.45 kgs overweight, 60% above ideal body weight or have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of >40.
